About Me - Debra J. RigasThough I have been highly trained in several fields, the arts have been in my blood since I was quite young. My father was a jazz musician in Europe, where I lived until age 11. Exposed early to languages and culture, I acquired a deep appreciation for international art forms. My interest in films began at age ten: I'll never forget sitting in an outdoor cinema to watch Taylor and Burton in Cleopatra on a giant screen near Athens, Greece. I was inspired to write my first 'play' a few days later. The acting bug bit in my early teens, leading me to traverse the United States, broadening my skill base. Live theatre, improv and voice overs provided sustained income, fascinating challenges, and satisfying experiences. Through the years I was privileged to study or work with many talented and creative individuals and groups, among them: The National Theatre of the Deaf, Takis Muzinidis of the National Greek Theatre of Athens, Kristin Linklater, Kermit Love, Kathleen Collins, and John FitzGibbon. After a hiatus of a number of years, I was recently indoctrinated into the delightful theatrical troupe Brethren of the Coast - Pirates! In 1975, I assisted in the startup of KVVP-FM Radio Station in Louisiana, where I laid my foundation for advertising and content writing. Moving to Hawaii in 1977, I co-created Fire Mountain Theatre Company with Nelson Clark, for residents and tourists on the Big Island. From 1978-80, I held the position of Assistant Managing Director to Jane Campbell at the internationally acclaimed Honolulu Theatre for Youth, for which I served in multiple capacities ranging from annual Tour Manager to assisting in fundraising from national endowments and international corporations. I served on the Hawaii State Theatre Council Board of Directors, and was involved in development, production, and marketing of both classic and new plays for the Hawaii Performing Arts Company. I also performed in or helped produce numerous other plays on Oahu. I furthered studies in the liberal arts at the University of Hawaii before moving back to the mainland, where I continued to perform in the aforementioned capacities. For a period of 20 years, I advised non-profit organizations in the areas of marketing and fundraising. I owned my own web-design and marketing business for almost five years in Seattle, before moving to Los Angeles. As a writer for over 25 years, I currently have five works in progress. Recently completed the final draft with Randy Luethye for The Box Office Hit. My preference is to serve behind the scenes in creating meaningful work. It is a joy to return to the arts by moving into the production arena of the film industry. |
